Myotonic goats are a hardy landrace breed originally appearing in Tennessee in the 1870's. They are characterized by a genetic condition, myotonia, which causes their muscles to stiffen when they are startled. The result of this muscle stiffening is staggering, teetering and occasionally falling over. Because of this characteristic, they are commonly called Tennessee fainting goats, stiff-legged goats, wood leg goats or scare goats. The term "fainting goat", while popular, is inaccurate as the goats do not faint - they remain fully conscious and often continue chewing or "talking"  during an episode. The myotonic episode is usually short in duration and the goat resumes its normal activities quickly with no harm done. The degree of myotonia displayed varies with each goat depending on its genetics.

Myotonic goats are hardy, muscular and adaptable.  Multiple births, easy deliveries and superb maternal instincts are typical of the does. The myotonic stiffening produces large tender muscles making this an excellent meat goat breed.  Our foundation stock comes from Onion Creek Ranch in Lohn, Texas. Owner Suzanne Gasparotto is the developer of the Tennessee Meat Goat tm and Texmaster tm improved myotonic breeds, a regular contributing author for GoatRancher magazine, and originator of GoatCamp tm. We are grateful to Suzanne for introducing us to these wonderful animals.

While the does will breed year round, we typically plan our kiddings for January through March, avoiding the worst of our South Texas heat.  Kids will usually be available for sale from March on.

If you're looking to improve your meat-goat herd or would like to have an unusual addition to your hobby farm, we highly recommend this breed. For more information about Myotonic goats please feel free to contact us.
